Pioneer Burying Ground

The Pioneer Burying Ground is located at the intersection of South Main Street and Mendon Road in Pittsford, New York. It is one of the oldest cemeteries in Monroe County. Town founders Simon and Israel Stone purchased the three acres of land using $250 of community funds. Intended for public use, the cemetery shared the land with a school house and church. The first burial, dated 1797, is that of Rebecca, the wife of Josiel Farr. Others buried there include veterans dating back to the Revolutionary War and civic leaders responsible for establishing the area. The cemetery is now considered closed. The Pittsford Department of Public Works maintains the grounds.
